Have you ever gone to repair something with bolts needed to be loosened and you try to do it by hand?
You probably know it's difficult:
No matter how hard you try, your strength can't overcome the frictional forces found in the helical inclined plane of the bolt threads
What do you do?
You find a tool: a wrench
Once it is positioned, the forged instrument maintains contact while you apply your power through the length of the lever arm.
It feels almost effortless
Why would you ever be without a wrench again?
This is the power of leverage
Apply a force across a distance
and receive a greater result than what was put in
Put many levers around a center to make a gear (10 min video: spinning levers)
You've benefited from a gear train when bicycling up a hill: to overcome the larger force of gravity, shift the gear ratio to create mechanical advantage so your same input will result in a greater output to ascend the slope
The same goes with the creative process:
Construct tools that do the work for you Create a system and routine that affords consistency Input: an idea, observation, thought (internal insight) Output: atomic essay (external expression)
Developing the tool takes time and is continually tweaked
As you pin down this process, then the journey from input to output begins to take less and less effort
When you don't feel like it, fall back on your mind's factory:
full of machinery to transform your effort into productivity
