Were you surprised when life became color?
My mother stood confused
I clarified: I thought the world was in black and white before color television.
Didn't life suddenly turn from boring, dull monochrome to vivid hues?
Through the window of the TV, I saw the outside world:
news, entertainment, history
My eight-year old mind had jumped to the conclusion that the charcoal records of the past accurately portrayed reality
Fast forward to the present
We exist in living color
Look out into nature
and see the diverse shades of ink painting the landscape
Look down at your phone
and see the apps and badges vying for your attention
A missed call
An unread message
An app visually luring you in to tap
Intense reds, greens and blues hold their power,
tempting us to pull down one more time
What if I told you there was a way to break the spell
from the siren call of the cellular shapes?
Use greyscale mode on your phone
You can configure it so that you can switch back and forth as needed
When I turn off the color, I feel at peace
Like putting on noise-cancelling headphones for your eyes
Greyscale won't completely block me from checking again
But it's certainly less enticing
Give it a try! There's not much to lose But a whole lot to gain
Color should be saved for artful decisions and
bringing your attention to important things
