Didn't you just get your haircut? My mother asked
It grows so fast
It was just four weeks ago
She recalled how my hair had always grown so quickly
I guess maybe it is time for a haircut
After all, I enjoy the feeling of drying my hair faster
This got me to thinking: I get my hair cut and then weeks later, it needs cutting again. At what point does it go from a fresh haircut to hair that needs to be trimmed once again?
In other words, as something grows,
how do we perceive the different stages that it goes in?
Philosophers have thought about this: sorites paradox
1,000,000 grains of sand is a heap of sand (Premise 1)
A heap of sand minus one grain is still a heap. (Premise 2)
If you continue Premise 2, eventually your heap just has one grain.
So at what point did it go from a heap to not a heap?
I find this useful as I learn different skills and practice new artforms.
I am a beginner when I know nothing. Yet when do I become (somewhat) knowledgeable? Or dare I say, an expert?
Maybe the classification doesn't matter The labels are useful as a quick way to convey progress What's more important is what I do with it
Did I create something?
Did I help someone else out?
Did I express my perspective?
Beyond that, continue putting in the work: one grain at a time
